Ben Silverman and Davis Shore are among the young, the journeymen, the amateurs and the dreamers who made it through qualifying to earn spots in the U.S. Open this week. Starting Thursday, they will play alongside the millionaire disrupters, players such as Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, whose move to the rival LIV Tour poses an existential threat to golf. This rare meeting of haves and have-nots is one of the most celebrated parts of the U.S. Open — a tournament that, technically, any pro or amateur with a low enough handicap can win. Silverman and Shore aren't necessarily against what Mickelson and Company are doing, but they are different in that their future depends on golf remaining a stable way to make a living via some tour.

Lebanon's state-run news agency says the country's caretaker energy minister has extended the licensing deadline for oil and gas companies to explore in the country’s territorial waters until mid-December, to give more firms the chance to bid. The agency said Wednesday's decision to extended the deadline of the second round of licensing followed a request by the Lebanese Petroleum Administration. In December 2017, the Lebanese government approved licenses for three international companies to carry out exploratory drilling in two of the 10 blocks off the Lebanese coast. The new round of licensing will cover the remaining eight offshore blocks.

Three firearms bills are headed to the governor’s desk after passing the Rhode Island Senate. The bills passed Tuesday are intended to reduce gun violence and prevent mass shootings. They include a ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, raise from 18 to 21 the minimum age for buying rifles and shotguns, and prohibit loaded rifles and shotguns from being carried in public. The bills were passed last week by the state House. Democratic Gov. Dan McKee is expected to sign them. The state Republican Party says the high-capacity magazine ban will turn law-abiding citizens into criminals.

Dozens of heavily armed men swarmed through the Mexican city of San Cristobal de las Casas, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said one person was killed in confrontations between two gangs. López Obrador said Wednesday that the two gangs were fighting for control of a public market in San Cristobal. Frightened residents posted videos of the armed men Tuesday, showing organized squads of men carrying military-style rifles through the city. San Cristobal de las Casas was briefly taken over by Indigenous Zapatista rebels during their 1994 uprising. The colonial-era southern city is popular among tourists.

Italian record label Frontiers specializes in mixing and matching heavy metal artists from different backgrounds to write and record new music, and they've put together a good one in Iconic. The band consists of Stryper singer Michael Sweet; Whitesnake guitarist Joel Hoekstra; Whitesnake and Ozzy Osbourne drummer Tommy Aldridge; and former Ted Nugent bassist Marco Mendoza. The project aims to better promote up-and-coming singer Nathan James, but his star turn comes at the expense of Sweet, who should have been given a more prominent vocal role, says AP's Wayne Parry. Overall, Iconic dishes out vintage ‘70s and ’80s metal with familiar elements.

Top-seeded Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium needed just 45 minutes to ease into the quarterfinals of the Veneto Open, beating compatriot Ysaline Bonaventure 6-2, 6-2. She will next face Ylena In-Albon after the Swiss player beat compatriot Susan Bandecchi 6-3, 6-3. Third-seeded Lucia Bronzetti and fifth-seeded Arantxa Rus were eliminated. It is the first WTA tournament played on natural grass in Italy and organizers are using former soccer fields for the courts. The host tennis club has been nicknamed “Gaibledon” in homage to Wimbledon.

A third arrest has been made in a mass shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where three people died and 14 were injured. News outlets cited an affidavit filed with the U.S. District Court for Eastern Tennessee in reporting that 31-year-old Rodney Harris was charged Tuesday in federal court with possession of a firearm by a felon. The affidavit says he was seen in a Facebook live video carrying a rifle in front of Mary’s Bar & Grill and was among the gunshot victims. Meanwhile, police made another appeal to the public to help identify possible suspects in the shooting. It wasn't immediately clear whether Harris has an attorney.

The Supreme Court says the federal government improperly lowered drug reimbursement payments to hospitals and clinics that serve low-income communities. The reduction ended up costing those facilities more than a billion dollars annually. The high court ruled unanimously in a case involving payments for drugs, largely for cancer, that are used by Medicare patients in hospital outpatient departments. The Biden administration had stood by a Trump administration decision to reduce the payments. Medicare provides health insurance for nearly 60 million people age 65 and older or for people with certain disabilities.

Connecticut’s diesel tax will increase by 9 cents per gallon on July 1 after a scheduled rate adjustment. The tax is currently 40.1 cents per gallon and will increase to 49.2 cents per gallon. That's according to a letter released Wednesday from Lamont to top Democrats and Republicans on the General Assembly’s tax-writing committee and to his budget director. State law requires that it be updated annually and be based on a complex formula that takes into account daily fuel prices at two terminals over the prior 365 days. Lamont's GOP rival in the election has called for the tax to be suspended.

The gunman who killed 10 Black people in a racist attack at a Buffalo supermarket has been charged with federal hate crimes. Payton Gendron already has pleaded not guilty to state-level charges, including hate-motivated domestic terrorism and murder following the May 14 rampage. The 18-year-old has been jailed without bail since his arrest at the Tops Friendly Market he allegedly targeted for its location in a predominantly Black neighborhood. Authorities say Gendron’s radical, racist worldview and extensive preparation for the massacre are laid out in online documents.

The Walz campaign says it has raised $1.8 million since Jan. 1 and has $4.5 million in cash on hand. The campaign says that bankroll is a record for a Minnesota gubernatorial campaign at this point in the election cycle. The Jensen campaign says it has raised $472,000 since January and has $660,000 left in the bank. Jensen spent heavily in his campaign to secure the GOP endorsement, while Walz faced no opposition for his party’s backing for a second term.

Shuster is a Moscow native currently spending much of his time in Kiev.

A minister in Pakistan’s newly elected government is facing criticism following his plea to the nation to drink less tea to help save on imports amid a deepening economic crisis. Tea is a hugely popular drink among both the rich and the poor in this country of 220 million people and the government has to spend about $600 million dollars from its hard currency reserves for tea imports annually. A Pakistani is believed to drink at least three cups a day. Still, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal’s appeal on Tuesday for Pakistanis to drink “one or two cups a day” less surprised many, leading to calls on social media for him to resign.

Prime Minister Hun Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party has sued the vice president of the opposition Candlelight Part for $1 million in compensation for comments he made in an online interview alleging that this month’s local elections were unfair. The Cambodian People’s Party filed the lawsuit against Son Chhay for saying that the nationwide commune elections were unfree as well as unfair.  Son Chhay had charged that the National Election Committee was biased in favor of the governing party and that there had been vote-buying and intimidation of voters. Russia’s Gazprom has announced a reduction in natural gas flows through a key European pipeline for the second day in a row, hours after Germany’s vice chancellor said its initial move appeared to be political rather than a result of techical problems. The state-owned energy giant said on Twitter that deliveries through the Nord Stream 1 undersea pipeline to Germany would be cut again Thursday, bringing the overall reduction in deliveries through the pipeline to 60%. The new cut came a day after Gazprom said it would reduce flows by 40% after Canadian sanctions over the war in Ukraine prevented German partner Siemens Energy from delivering overhauled equipment. It blamed the same issue for the additional reduction.
